When Should I Change My Oil?

Changing the oil on your vehicle is probably the most frequently performed maintenance yet one that causes the most confusion among drivers and car owners. Knowing when to change your oil is very important for your vehicle’s overall well-being and performance.

It’s important to realize that the frequency of oil changes is not the same for all vehicles. At Bel Air Subaru, our trained staff can give you tips on when the oil should be changed in your car. If you happen to be a Subaru owner, we can offer you various tips on oil changes and other maintenance.

When to Change My Oil?

When determining when to change your oil, always read the owner’s manual, which is located in the glove compartment of the vehicle. The manual will tell you not only how frequent the oil should be changed but also what type of oil your vehicle needs. While the recommendation for oil changes for many vehicles is still 3,000 miles, new cars like Subaru can be changed anywhere from 5,000 to 7,000 miles.

This is quite a variance, but certain factors may affect the time span. Here are some things to look for that may indicate your Subaru may be in need of an oil change.

  • The oil indicator light comes on. If this happens, it’s probably time for an oil change.
  • The oil is gritty, thick and black. The oil will turn dark because it’s doing its job and cleaning the engine, but it shouldn’t be gritty.
  • The oil level is low. Regardless of when you had the oil changed, it’s always good to manually check it under the hood.
  • Check engine light is lit up. If the check engine light comes on, something is going on and the vehicle should be serviced as soon as possible.
  • The engine runs louder than normal. The oil acts as a lubricant for the engine and prevents the engine components from rubbing together. If the engine is running loud, the parts could become damaged.
  • You can’t remember when the oil was changed. If it’s been so long since your Subaru had an oil change, it’s probably due for one.
